Lab orders and results, on the patient chart

Ona Labs lets practices order labs from the patient chart through Junction, Fullscript or a generated PDF requisition, then read every result in one place. Junction orders are tracked from requisition to result, and lab reports from Junction, a fax or an upload are parsed into values against their reference ranges, with trends over time.

  • Junction, Fullscript or PDF
  • Tracked order timeline
  • AI-parsed lab reports
  • Trends across labs

Lab ordering software lets a clinician order tests, follow them and review the results without leaving the patient record. In Ona, the AI-native practice management platform, Labs puts both halves on the chart: order electronically through Junction, from Fullscript's lab catalog, or with a PDF requisition, and read every result in the same Lab Reports page, whichever way it arrived.

It's built for practices that order a lot of labs and need to follow them over time: functional and integrative medicine, primary care, women's health and naturopathic doctors. An Owner or Admin turns it on in Settings → Dispensary → Labs, connects the integrations the practice uses, and every patient and visit gets Lab Orders and Lab Reports.

01 · Why it matters

Orders belong with the chart.

When ordering lives in a lab portal and results arrive as PDFs, the picture never comes together.

A typical work-up touches a lab portal to order, the phone to chase status, the fax tray for results and a folder of PDFs nobody can search. The numbers you actually reason from stay locked in documents, one report at a time.

Ona keeps orders and results on the patient. Every order sits in one timeline with its status, and every report, from Junction, a fax or an upload, is read into values against their reference ranges, so a marker can be followed across months and across labs.

02 · What you get

From the order to a reviewed result.

One menu, three ways to order

Order labs offers Order via Junction for an electronic order with tracked status, Order via Fullscript for Fullscript's lab catalog, and Lab Requisition for a signed PDF that needs no integration at all.

Every Junction order, tracked

A timeline from Ordered through Requisition created and Partial results to Completed, with the requisition and any ABN attached. Cancel an order, or mark an on-site draw completed, from the same page.

Results read for you

Junction results, faxed lab reports and anything you upload are parsed into values with their LOINC code, unit, flag and reference range, next to the original document. Clinicians accept each value.

Critical results don't wait

A report with a critical value opens with an Acknowledge prompt. For Junction orders, the ordering clinician is notified, and alerted again after 15 minutes if nobody has acknowledged it.

Trends across every lab

Trends charts any marker across the patient's reports, matched by LOINC code, so results from different labs line up on one line. Select a point to open the report it came from.

Requisitions filled in from the chart

The PDF pulls in the patient's details, the ordering provider's NPI, primary and secondary insurance and ICD-10 codes. Fax it to the lab, print it, or share it to the patient portal.

03 · How it works

From the visit to a reviewed result.

  1. Turn Labs on

An Owner or Admin turns on Labs in Settings → Dispensary → Labs, provisions Junction, and connects Fullscript if the practice uses it. Requisitions work with no integration at all.
  2. Order from the chart

In the patient's Lab Orders, or a visit's, choose Order labs. Junction shows each test's collection method, turnaround and lab fee, with the patient's ZIP code applied and their insurance for lab billing shown before you order.
  3. Follow the order

Junction orders update on their own. An Action required badge means the lab needs something, and the ordering clinician is notified. Junction can also text and email patients about draws and results.
  4. Review the results

Results open in Lab Reports beside the original document. Accept values, acknowledge critical results, mark the report reviewed, and follow each marker in Trends.
  5. Share with the patient

Share a requisition or a Junction order to the patient portal. Lab reports show there as Pending review, and values appear once a clinician has accepted them.

04 · In practice

Made for lab-heavy practices.

Functional medicine

Panels from several labs, one trend line.

Junction results land as parsed reports, and specialty results from elsewhere can be uploaded and parsed the same way. Trends lines markers up by LOINC code, so the baseline and the follow-up read side by side.

Primary care

Routine panels without the fax tray.

Order a panel through Junction from the visit, follow it on its timeline, and get the result as a report on the chart. Normal, abnormal and critical results notify the ordering clinician separately.

Practice without a lab integration

The paper route, done properly.

Generate a requisition with insurance and ICD-10 codes already filled in, fax it from Ona or share it to the portal, then upload the result when it comes back to have the values read.

Group practice

Results reach the clinician who ordered them.

Junction alerts go to the ordering clinician, or to the practice owners when that clinician can't be found. Each person chooses which lab alerts they want.

FAQ

Common questions.

Can I order labs from the patient chart?
Yes. A patient's Lab Orders page, and the same page inside a visit, has an Order labs menu: Order via Junction for an electronic order with tracked status and results, Order via Fullscript for Fullscript's lab catalog, and Lab Requisition for a PDF you fax, print or share. Every order shows in one timeline.
Which labs and tests can I order through Junction?
Junction is Ona's electronic lab ordering integration, and what you can order follows Junction's catalog. Filter by lab, search tests by name or code, and switch between panels and à la carte tests. Each test shows its collection method, turnaround and lab fee before you add it.
How does Fullscript lab ordering work in Ona?
Order via Fullscript opens Fullscript's lab catalog inside Ona. The order and any payment are handled in Fullscript, then the order appears in Lab Orders with its status, and the results PDF opens from it. Fullscript is connected per clinician, with your own practitioner account, and the patient needs an email address.
Do lab results come back into the chart automatically?
Junction results do: they arrive as lab reports and are parsed into values. A lab result that arrives by fax becomes a report once the fax is filed to the patient as lab results. Fullscript results come as a PDF, and requisition results come back however the lab sends them, so upload those to Lab Reports to have the values read.
What happens when a lab result is critical?
The report opens with “Critical result — acknowledge now”, and an Owner, Admin or clinician records that it's been seen. For Junction orders, the ordering clinician is notified straight away and alerted again after 15 minutes if nobody has acknowledged it.
Can patients see their lab results in the patient portal?
Yes, when Labs is on. Lab reports appear in the portal as Pending review until a clinician marks them reviewed, and only values a clinician has accepted are shown. Requisitions and Junction orders you share appear there too, with the requisition to download. Sharing doesn't send the patient a notification.
Do I need a lab integration to use Labs?
No. Lab Requisition generates a signed PDF filled in from the chart without any integration, and Lab Reports parses any report you upload. Junction and Fullscript are optional, and add electronic ordering and tracked status.
