E-prescribing with DoseSpot
Enroll your clinic and prescribers with DoseSpot, then send prescriptions — including controlled substances — straight from the chart.
Ona prescribes through DoseSpot, a certified e-prescribing service. Setup is a one-time enrollment per clinic and per prescriber; after that, a clinician can send a prescription straight from a patient's chart.
The DoseSpot settings page
Go to Settings → DoseSpot — "set up e-prescribing, link prescribers, and sync patients before launching DoseSpot charts".
Enrollment is three steps.
Connection
The top card shows the clinic's DoseSpot connection. When live it reads Ready — "prescribers can launch DoseSpot from any patient chart" — with your Clinic ID and the number of prescribers linked.
Step 2 — Provision prescribers
"Link team members who will prescribe." Each prescriber is listed with their NPI and a Status (e.g. Linked). The note reassures you it's safe to redo: "Re-running with the same NPI is safe and recovers existing accounts." Relink re-establishes the connection if a clinician's account drifts.
Every clinician who prescribes needs to be provisioned here. A clinician who isn't linked can't launch DoseSpot, which is the most common reason prescribing appears unavailable.
Step 3 — DEA numbers
"Store DEA registrations for provisioned clinicians." Pick a clinician, then Add DEA. When none is on file it reads "No DEA numbers on file — add the clinician's DEA registration before prescribing controlled substances."
This step gates controlled substances specifically. A clinician can prescribe ordinary medications once linked in Step 2, but EPCS (electronic prescribing of controlled substances) requires a DEA number recorded here.
Sending a prescription
Once setup is complete, prescribing happens from the patient. Open a visit or patient chart and go to DoseSpot in the E-prescribing section of the sidebar. This launches the DoseSpot interface, where the actual prescription is written and transmitted to the pharmacy.
Because the prescription itself is sent through DoseSpot to a real pharmacy, treat it with the same care as any clinical order — the right patient, the right drug, the right pharmacy. Ona hands off to DoseSpot for the transmission; the clinical responsibility stays with the prescriber.
A note on setup order
The three steps are sequential and each unlocks the next: the clinic connects, prescribers link, then DEA numbers enable controlled substances. If prescribing isn't working, check them in that order — an unlinked prescriber or a missing DEA number is nearly always the cause, not the connection itself.
