Ordering labs through Junction
Place electronic lab orders from the patient chart, follow each order from requisition to result, and unstick orders that stop updating.
Junction is Ona's electronic lab ordering route. The order goes straight to the lab. Its status updates on its own as the sample is collected and processed, and the results come back into the patient's chart as a lab report. You don't need to fax or re-key anything.
Connecting Junction
An Owner or Admin sets Junction up once for the practice.
- Go to Settings → Dispensary → Labs and turn Labs on.
- Open Connect Junction (also at Settings → Dispensary → Junction).
- Select Provision clinic in Junction. When the connection card reads Ready, and the webhook shows Registered, anyone with an ordering role can place orders.
If the card shows Setup incomplete, or the webhook reads Not registered, select Re-run provisioning, then Check status. If the page says the deployment has no Junction credentials, contact Ona support. That part is configured on our side.
Patient messaging
Under Patients, the Junction messages patients toggle controls whether Junction texts and emails patients about their draws and results. It's on by default. Ona itself never messages patients about lab orders, so if you turn it off, telling the patient what to do next is up to your team.
Placing an order
- Open the patient and go to Lab Orders. It's in the Dispensary section of the patient record, and of the visit sidebar.
- Select Order labs → Order via Junction.
If the menu shows Connect Junction instead, the practice isn't connected yet (see above).
Ona syncs the patient to Junction, then opens the ordering flow inside the chart. It takes three steps: confirm the patient, select the order set, and review and submit.
- Filter by lab, and search tests by name or code. The patient's zip code is applied for you.
- Switch between Panels and A la carte.
- Each test shows its Collection methods (walk-in, at-home phlebotomy or test kit), Lab turnaround time and Lab services fee. Select Add to order to add it.
- The rail on the right keeps the patient details, the tests in the order, and any Ask on Order Entry questions the lab needs answered. Select Continue to review when everything is complete.
When you submit, Ona records the order and opens its detail page.
If the order won't open
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The patient profile is missing details Junction needs | Select Update patient details. Junction needs first and last name, email, phone, date of birth, and a full street address with city, state and ZIP. Then select Try again. |
| Lab ordering is unavailable | Junction isn't fully set up for the practice. An Admin can select Open lab settings and finish provisioning. |
| You can't order labs for this patient | Your role can't order labs. Ask an Owner or Admin. |
| Couldn't load Junction ordering | Select Retry. If your browser keeps blocking it, Order in Junction instead opens Junction directly, when your practice allows it. |
Following an order
Lab Orders lists every order for the patient, grouped by month, newest first. Junction orders sit alongside Fullscript orders and lab requisitions.
- Filter with All, In progress, Results and Requisitions. A filter only appears when it has something in it.
- Each Junction row shows the tests, the lab, the collection method and the order date.
- The status reads Received, Collecting sample, At lab or Completed. An order that stops without results reads Cancelled or Failed.
- The Results ready badge (or Partial results) means results have arrived, and takes you to them in Lab Reports.
- A red Action required badge means Junction needs something from you, such as a missing answer or a redraw. The ordering clinician is also notified.
The order page
Select an order to open it.
- Results: Awaiting results until the lab reports. After that, it shows Results ready, Partial results in or Critical value to review, with the marker count and when the results arrived. Select Open lab report to read them. See Reviewing lab reports.
- Tests & markers: what was ordered, the lab and sample type, and whether fasting is required.
- Timeline: every status change from Junction, newest first. For example, Ordered, Requisition created, Partial results, Completed.
- Details: collection method, lab, who ordered it and when, the Junction order ID, and when it last synced.
- Documents: the Requisition, Labels and Collection instructions from Junction, plus an ABN when the lab issued one. Print the labels and instructions for walk-in and test-kit collections.
Cancelling an order
Select Cancel order on the order page. It's offered until the order is completed, cancelled or failed. Junction decides whether the order can still be cancelled. Once the sample is at the lab, it usually can't be. If Junction refuses, its reason is shown.
When an order looks stuck
If an order hasn't moved in a while, but you know the sample was collected, an Owner or Admin can select Resend updates under Admin on the order page. Junction redelivers the order's latest status, and the timeline catches up.
Notifications
Junction events notify the ordering clinician in Ona. If Ona can't find that clinician, the practice owners are notified instead.
- Lab results ready: final results are in, and every marker is within range.
- Abnormal lab result: final results include values outside the reference range.
- Critical lab result: review and acknowledge now. If nobody acknowledges it within 15 minutes, the alert is sent again, and the practice owners are included.
- Lab order needs attention: the order has an Action required issue.
- Lab order cancelled or failed: no results will arrive.
- Lab order placed outside Ona: someone ordered for this patient directly in Junction. It still appears in the patient's Lab Orders.
