Food journal defaults
Turn the Food Journal on or off for your organization and set patient-level nutrition targets, including whether patients see calories in their own journal.
Food journal organization settings are managed from Settings → Food Journal. In the left sidebar, click Settings (at the bottom). In the settings menu, under Configuration, click Food Journal. When the feature is enabled, a patient food journal can show meal entries, nutrition trends, targets and an entries table.
How do I turn on the Food Journal?
In the left sidebar, click Settings (at the bottom). In the settings menu, under Configuration, click Food Journal. Use this page to enable meal logging and review tools for your organization.
- Turn on Food Journal.
Ona saves the change automatically. When the setting is on, patients can log meals, and the patient food journal includes daily nutrition analytics and nutritional target management.
How do I turn off the Food Journal?
In the left sidebar, click Settings (at the bottom). In the settings menu, under Configuration, click Food Journal. Turn the feature off when your organization should stop using food journal features.
- Turn off Food Journal.
Ona saves the change automatically. When the setting is off, the patient food journal page redirects away instead of opening.
How do I set nutrition targets for a patient?
In the left sidebar, click Patients, then click the patient's name. In the patient chart sidebar, click Food Journal. Targets apply to that patient and are used in the food journal analytics and, in the patient's own view, the daily macro summary.
- In the Targets card, select Set if no target exists, or Edit if the patient already has one.
- Choose Start from preset if you want to begin with a standard set of numbers.
- Enter or adjust Calories (kcal), Protein (g), Carbs (g) and Fat (g).
- Open Optional: Fiber & Sodium targets if you also want to set Fiber (g) or Sodium (mg).
- Select Save target.
The Targets card updates with the saved values. The food journal compares average calories, protein, carbs and fat against the target.
How do I hide calories from a patient?
In the left sidebar, click Patients, then click the patient's name. In the patient chart sidebar, click Food Journal. Hide calories from patient is part of that patient's nutrition target.
- In the Targets card, select Set or Edit.
- Turn on Hide calories from patient.
- Select Save target.
The Targets card shows Calories hidden from patient. In the patient's own food journal view, calorie counts are hidden from the daily summary and food item nutrient details. Protein, carbs and fat remain visible.
Nutrition target presets
In the left sidebar, click Patients, then click the patient's name. In the patient chart sidebar, click Food Journal. Use Start from preset in a patient's food journal target panel when you want a starting point you can edit before saving.
| Preset | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Fat | Other target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 2,000 kcal | 150 g | 250 g | 65 g | — |
| Weight Loss | 1,500 kcal | 140 g | 150 g | 50 g | — |
| High Protein | 2,200 kcal | 200 g | 200 g | 70 g | — |
| Low Carb | 1,800 kcal | 160 g | 100 g | 100 g | — |
| Low Sodium | 2,000 kcal | 130 g | 260 g | 65 g | Sodium 1,500 mg |
Choosing a preset fills the target fields. You can change any value before selecting Save target.
What can't I do here?
Food journal settings and targets are limited in these ways:
- Food journal organization settings are for owners and admins.
- Save target is disabled until Calories (kcal) has a value.
- Custom date ranges in the food journal cannot include future dates.
- If the Food Journal is disabled, the patient food journal page redirects away instead of opening.
