Managing lab ranges

Add your clinic's own lab ranges, organize them by category, import them from a document, and move or delete saved ranges. These ranges are read beside the lab's own ranges on patient results.

Lab ranges stores the clinic ranges your team reads beside the lab's own reference ranges on patient results. Open Lab ranges to add ranges by hand, import them from a document, organize them by category, and keep the library up to date.

How do categories work in Lab ranges?

In Lab ranges, use categories to keep your clinic ranges grouped by test type and to make the list easier to scan.

1All ranges2Category list3Search tests

Use All ranges (1) to see every saved range, Category list (2) to switch to one group, and Search tests (3) to narrow the list by test name or the label you entered in Called.

  1. In the left sidebar, click Library, then click Lab ranges.
  2. Select All ranges to see every saved range, or choose a category from the list on the left to see only that group.
  3. Use Search tests to narrow the list by test name or by the label you entered in Called.

On smaller screens, use the category picker above the list to choose a category. In All ranges, each row also shows its category. Inside a category, the second column shows whether the range was imported or added by hand.

Only categories that currently contain at least one range appear in the category list. If a range moves out of a category, the category list and All ranges view update straight away.

How do I add a lab range?

In Lab ranges, click New range to add a clinic range by hand.

  1. In the left sidebar, click Library, then click Lab ranges.
  2. Click New range.
  3. Enter the test name in Test.
  4. In Category, leave Automatic if you want Ona to work out the category from the test, or choose a category yourself to override it.
  5. Enter a value in Low, High, or both. You need at least one bound to save the range.
  6. Enter Unit if you want the saved bounds shown with a unit.
  7. If needed, change Called, choose For, and add a Note. Called is the label shown beside the range, and For lets you save the range for Everyone, Women, or Men.
  8. Click Add range.

The range is saved in your library and starts being read beside the lab's own range on patient results for that test. If a result uses another unit, Ona converts it.

How do I edit a range or change its category?

On the same page, use Edit when you need to change the saved bounds, label, people, note, or category for one range.

1Test2Category3Save

Use Test (1) to change the test name, Category (2) to assign the range to another category or leave it automatic, and Save (3) to keep your changes.

  1. In Lab ranges, find the range you want to update.
  2. Open the ⋯ menu for that row and click Edit.
  3. Update the fields you need, including Category if you want to reassign the range.
  4. Click Save.

The changes apply immediately. If you changed Category, the range moves to that category as soon as it saves.

How do I move a range to another category from the list?

On the same page, use Move to when the range itself is correct and you only need to put it in another category.

1Row menu2Move to3Category choice
  1. In Lab ranges, find the range you want to move.
  2. Open the ⋯ menu for that row and point to Move to.
  3. Select the category you want.

The range leaves its old category and appears in the new one right away. If you move the last range out of the category you are viewing, the page returns to All ranges.

How do I import clinic ranges from a document?

In Lab ranges, click Import from a document to pull ranges from a PDF or image instead of adding them one by one.

Use Imported rows (1) to review what Ona read from the file, Replaces yours (2) to spot rows that will overwrite an existing saved range for the same people, and Save button (3) to keep the ranges you selected.

  1. In the left sidebar, click Library, then click Lab ranges.
  2. Click Import from a document.
  3. Upload a PDF, JPG, or PNG from the upload area. The file can be up to 20 MB.
  4. Review the ranges Ona reads from the document, and clear any rows you do not want to keep. Use the checkbox above the list if you want to keep or clear every row at once.
  5. If a row shows Replaces yours, decide whether you want that imported row to replace your existing saved range for the same people.
  6. Click Save 1 range if you are keeping one row, or Save {number} ranges if you are keeping more than one.

The kept rows are saved to your library. If Ona cannot find any ranges in the file, the dialog shows No ranges found and you can click Try another document. If you want to upload a different file before saving, click Start over.

How do I delete a range?

On the same page, delete a range when you no longer want your team to read patient results against it.

  1. In Lab ranges, find the range you want to remove.
  2. Open the ⋯ menu for that row and click Delete.
  3. In the confirmation dialog, click Delete.

The range is removed from your library. Results stop being read against it, and the lab's own ranges stay as they are.

What can't I do here?

In Lab ranges, access and saving are limited in these ways:

  • Staff and clinicians cannot manage lab ranges from this library.
  • You cannot save a range without a value in Test.
  • You cannot save a range unless Low, High, or both are filled in.
  • Low and High must be numbers.
  • You cannot save a range if Low is above High.
  • You cannot use Move to to switch a range back to Automatic. To remove a manual category, open Edit and change Category there.
  • You cannot save an import until at least one range is kept.
  • Empty categories do not stay in the category list. A category appears only while at least one saved range is in it.

Common questions

What does Automatic mean in Category?

Automatic lets Ona work out the category from the test. Choose a category yourself only when you want to override that automatic category.

Can I save a range with only a low or only a high bound?

Yes. You need at least one bound, not both. A saved range can be a full range, a low-only cutoff, or a high-only cutoff.

Why did a category disappear from the list?

The category list only shows categories that currently contain at least one saved range. If you move or delete the last range in a category, that category drops out of the list.

What does Replaces yours mean when I import?

It means the imported row matches one of your existing saved ranges for the same people. If you keep that row and save the import, the imported row replaces your existing one.

Can I add a clinic range while reviewing a lab report?

Yes. You can open the same clinic range dialog from a result while reviewing a lab report, and it starts with that result's test and unit. For the rest of the review workflow, see Reviewing lab reports.
