Body map

Use the Body map in a patient's chart or visit to pin findings to the front or back of the body, review earlier findings, and read each kind, field, and region label.

Patient chart11 min readUpdated

The Body map section appears in a patient's chart and in visits when your organization has turned the section on in Charting Sections. Use it on a patient's chart or in a visit to pin findings to the front or back body figure, focus into one area, and, in a visit, bring earlier findings forward as new pins. See Finding your way around the patient chart or Finding your way around a visit if you need help getting there. Changes appear on the map right away and then save in the background.

Body map controls

In the Body map section on a patient's chart or in a visit, these controls change what you see and what you can chart.

ControlWhat it does
PlaceChooses what the next pin will be. The menu shows the enabled finding kinds for your organization. This control is hidden when the map is read-only.
Earlier visits / Hide earlier visitsIn a visit, shows or hides findings from other visits so you can chart them again in the current visit. This toggle does not appear on the patient chart, and it is hidden when the visit is read-only.
Whole body, Head & neck, Torso, Right arm, Left arm, Right hand, Left hand, Right leg, Left leg, Right foot, Left footFocus chips that switch the large view to that body area on both the front and back figures. Whole body resets the view.
Pick or double-click a partHelper text shown when Whole body is selected. You can focus a body area from the overview, or double-click a region on the large figure to zoom to that part.
Esc or click again to step outHelper text shown when one area is in focus. Press Esc, or click the same focused part again, to return to Whole body.
+N moreWhen one side of the map is crowded, the map shortens labels and may group the rest under a list like +3 more. Select an item there to open that pin, or to chart that earlier finding again.
Chart againOn an earlier finding in a visit, creates a new pin in the current visit at the same spot, with the same kind, details, and note as the earlier finding.
DeleteRemoves the open pin from the body map.
Pin removed / UndoAppears after a pin is deleted. Undo restores that pin. The undo notice stays available for 8 seconds.
DoneCloses the open pin editor.

When you open a pin for editing, the editor starts with that kind's primary fields. On kinds that have more fields, you can expand the editor to show the remaining fields and Note. If you change an existing pin to a different kind, the kind-specific details are cleared and the note is kept.

Access and availability

In the Body map section on a patient's chart, in a visit, and in Charting Sections, these rules control when it appears and what you can do there. Use Settings (1) in the left sidebar, then Charting Sections (2) in the settings menu to turn the section on or off and choose what finding kinds are available.

1Settings2Charting Sections
RuleWhat it means
Section availabilityYour organization must have Body map turned on in Charting Sections. If the section is off, it does not appear in the chart or visit.
Charting settingsOwners and admins can turn Body map on or off for the patient chart and visits in Charting Sections, and can switch individual finding kinds on or off there.
Enabled kindsThe Place menu shows only the finding kinds your organization has left on. If a kind is switched off later, marks already charted with that kind still stay on the map.
Existing marks with a switched-off kindIf you open a mark whose kind has since been switched off, that kind still stays available on that mark so it can be reviewed or kept.
Patient chart vs visitIn the patient chart, the map shows every body-map mark for the patient. In a visit, it shows only the marks charted in that visit, with other visits available through Earlier visits.
Earlier-finding dedupingIn a visit, an earlier finding is not offered again if the current visit already has a mark of the same kind at the same spot.
Read-only stateWhen the chart or visit is read-only, you can still open pins and read their details, but you cannot place, move, edit, delete, or bring back findings. The Place control is hidden, and the Earlier visits toggle is not shown.
Phone patient chartIn the patient chart, Body map is not shown in the phone layout.

If you use the Body map in visits to pull prior findings into today's note, see Carrying records forward between visits.
