Guardian and dependent profiles in the patient portal

Switch between your own patient portal profile and a dependent's profile when guardian access is available. See which pages are blocked while you are acting as a dependent.

The patient portal lets guardians view a dependent's profile instead of their own. When you switch profiles, the portal updates to show that dependent's content, and a banner stays visible until you switch back.

How do I switch to a dependent's profile?

In the patient portal home page, use the Family section to open a dependent's profile. Open the patient portal home page first, then look for Family. This section only appears when you are viewing your own profile and you have dependents available.

  1. Open the patient portal home page.
  2. Find the Family section.
  3. Select the dependent you want to view.
  4. The portal switches to that dependent's profile.
  5. Check the banner at the top to confirm whose profile you are viewing.

Each card in Family shows the dependent's name and relationship. It also shows how many items are waiting when that dependent has pending forms or consents.

How do I know when I am acting as a dependent?

In the patient portal, a banner appears at the top whenever you are viewing a dependent's profile. It tells you whose profile you are viewing and gives you a quick way back.

When the banner is visible, you are acting as that dependent. The portal blocks some areas until you switch back to your own profile.

How do I switch back to my own profile?

In the patient portal, open any page while you are acting as a dependent and use the banner at the top.

  1. Open any page while viewing the dependent profile.
  2. Find the banner that says you are viewing the dependent's profile.
  3. Select Switch back to me.
  4. The portal returns to your own profile.

What can't I do while viewing a dependent?

In the patient portal, some pages are only available on your own profile. When you are acting as a dependent, these areas are replaced with a message and a Switch back to me button:

  • Messages
  • Food journal entries
  • Account settings

If you need one of those pages, switch back to your own profile first.
